Indian film industry has drastically changed in last 10 years. One of the major change is theme of the movie. More number of homosexual films are being produced in recent years. Recently, I saw 'Student of the Year' film. An idea behind writing this post came from that film. Dostana, produced by Karan Johar has leading contribution to start gay trend in India. Karan Johar is latest Gay Icon in South Asia and India. His recent film 'Student of the Year' has few gay scenes. I found them irritating in the film. I think there was no scope for gay scenes in the script. In recent release of Abhishek Bachchan’s (who was leading actor of Dostana) ‘Bol Bachan’ has spice of Gayness. The film is ‘Hundred Crore Club’ member.
Though, Dostana’s name itself explains homosexuality, it is not the first film to represent same sex relationship. Fashion (2008), Honeymoon travels (2007), My brother Nikhil (2005), Girlfriend (2004) were another homosexual related films who raised this issue. Western countries are permitting same sex marriage which has huge impact on LGBT people living in India. They are coming out publicly as with their homosexual identity and this is another reason for the boom in adding gay/lesbian character in the movie. Nowadays, directors add up gay/ lesbian character in his film to add fun value and to attract LGBT members so that film collection crosses the investment value.
While we talk about gay characters as a fun value, attempts are being made by new directors and writers to make a film portraying gay characters and their feelings. Films like Dunno y... Na Jaane Kyon (2010), My Brother Nikhil (2005), Mango Souffle (2002) have presented issue of homosexuality very systematically. While Same sex marriage issue is in Indian court, Bollywood has vital role in understanding Indian masses about same sex relationship. One thing is clear that allowing same sex marriage in India will have huge impact over Indian culture.
